Never Sleeps

While a pastor on the Fort Berthold Reservation I was honored with the Indian name, "NeverSleeps". It was primarily because I was often responding to particular needs in the middle of the night.

Even more relevant, the Lord Himself, Maker of all, "Never Sleeps".

Surely you know.
Surely you have heard.
The Lord is the God who lives forever,
who created all the world.
He does not become tired or need to rest.
No one can understand how great his wisdom is.

Isaiah 40:28

Welcome to every reader. I am a simple follower of Jesus. He is perfect, I often fall short.

DisCovered

DisCovered

(“[The Lord’s] intention in giving me this authority is to build you up, not tear you down.” 2 Corinthians 13:10b)

Buried beneath truckloads of shame,
beneath the heavy loam where breath is lost and
light barely breaks between the clods; he was still,
no, he was stiffened as the fright consumed the nerve endings
from finger tips to toes; clamping fists and eyelids clenched,
he would have held his breath forever, if forever was possible
to keep it from escaping.

They stood him up. Yes, someone discovered the burial mound.
The brushed him off. Yes, the mud stuck to his sight, to his bones.
They whispered long. Yes, the words were mixed, like blizzards in Spring.
He found his legs while the world spun against him.

He delayed his reply; would his past-tense stories be held against him?
He heard one hope; perhaps the night had stretched far enough that
morning was required.

They stood him up and brushed him off. He found his legs and turned around.

And 100 people stared at the emaciated corpse before them;
his rescuers spoke in uncertain terms (parsing their words, though)
while the little blood left drained from his face and the room spun while
the rest of them whispered their own stories (confidences trusted, lives
broken by the telling).

The promise, the restoration, the power, the indoctrination all
spilled like blood before him. Sick and nearly dead from wearied
cringing,
he hoped the syringe was a dream he could wake from. It was a
handgun he had to wait for, brandished by the promisers and
primed by the best pharisees and new-charisma followers who
could not tell the difference between their night-dreams and
a man’s daylight weeping.

He limps still. The wound is open still. The grave they found him in
was filled in long ago; it’s a hotel for conventions and he was
never invited to its groundbreaking or Grand Open-

"It's All About the Service"

“I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?” 2 Corinthians 12:15

Perhaps you have a couple of friends like this. You go out to coffee, talk, laugh and share stories. Then, getting up to leave, he reaches for the bill without allowing me even a courteous attempt at paying it myself. Then, a few days later I visit another friend for lunch. We talk about mutual interests, catch up on old times and tease the entire wait staff. Without a moment’s thought she sweeps up the check with sleight-of-hand dexterity. I didn’t have a chance. Or, maybe we are going to a movie and the same friend is impatiently keeping his place in line ahead of me. Of course, I understand why once we are at the ticket booth and he is saying, “Two, please.”

Rejoice; the Almighty Reigns

“Hallelujah! The Lord our God, the Almighty, has become king.  Let us rejoice, be happy, and give him glory.” Revelation 9:6b, 7a

There have been more interpretations of the Book of Revelation than the number of church denominations throughout history. Whatever I write today will have as many detractors as those who say “Amen!” Whether we view the entire book as a tome of future events, an extended metaphor about Christ and the Church, or some combination of the two, there is blessing attached to its reading. “I’m coming soon! Blessed is the one who follows the words of the prophecy in this book.” Revelation 22:7

Under Laminate Table

Under Laminate Tables

(“This is the message of God, the Master: ‘I’ve put up with you long enough, princes of Israel! Quit bullying and taking advantage of my people. Do what’s just and right for a change.’” Ezekiel 45:9 [The Message])

Is our hiding a dangerous planet where breezes blow hot
and friendships grow cold? Or is it
merely an experiment in language that calls Home
the place we occupy plus
the place we wish to return?

Are the caves in the hills welcome respite
from the sun that broils skin to leather,
or prisons to which we retreat when the
enemy runs to fast to notice the grotto’s closed mouth?

A fence holds bully and victim
both within its perimeter, chain-link mainly made
to keep us all from slopping onto the street. Borders are
no better when the authorities can send the helpless away
and file their reports at the end of the day stating
“one less in state, one more over there”.

Maybe today one man with a mouthful of power will
speak without though of protecting his position
and instead will dread the outcome of tiny lies to
tiny people that pile up like hay too late in the fall.

Maybe someday we will never think to bring the whole ship down
just to rid us of the one non-swimmer. Could be
this day
the dangers won’t press their luck
within conference rooms underneath
laminate tables,
but rise to the top where everyone will see

What Truth Himself has seen all along.

So today, though hiding is this planet’s magnetism,
and the gravity of the world would grasp me by the temples,
I think I’ll wait out the cons and the causes of the downstream blue,
and fashion sweeter air while I meander my way from present loved
and future hoped home.
