Never Sleeps

While a pastor on the Fort Berthold Reservation I was honored with the Indian name, "NeverSleeps". It was primarily because I was often responding to particular needs in the middle of the night.

Even more relevant, the Lord Himself, Maker of all, "Never Sleeps".

Surely you know.
Surely you have heard.
The Lord is the God who lives forever,
who created all the world.
He does not become tired or need to rest.
No one can understand how great his wisdom is.

Isaiah 40:28

Welcome to every reader. I am a simple follower of Jesus. He is perfect, I often fall short.

The Lord is Righteous

The Lord is Righteous

(“For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds. The upright will see His face.” Psalm 11:7)

“Righteousness” is not a word we use very often in everyday language. Even as followers of Jesus we may have a vague notion of righteousness. We know it has something to do with being good, and being fair. Because it is heard more often in religious conversation than informal talk, it can take on an other-wordly sense, and we think little about what it means in 21st century day to day life.

I Hate Fighting

“Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.” Titus 3:7

I hate fighting. I hate trying to prove that I am right. I hate arguing my way into being accepted. I cannot stand wrestling to be understood, even at the risk of being even more misunderstood. I hate the energy it takes trying to prove that I’m an okay guy. I hate fighting.

Righteous, dude!

“Since, then, we are made righteous through faith, let us enjoy peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1

“Righteous, dude!” Yes, the surfer slang doesn’t come close to what the Scriptures mean by “righteous”. But, on second thought, maybe it conveys the feeling one has upon realizing they have absolutely been “made righteous” in God’s sight.

Shine Like the Sun

“But everyone who has done right will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom. If you have ears, pay attention!” Matthew 13:43

The great painter Vincent Van Gogh said, in a letter to his sister Wilhelmina, “it is obvious that putting little white dots on the blue-black is not enough to paint a starry sky.” If you take a few moments to view his famous painting, “The Starry Night”, you know exactly what he means. These are not stars as they “are”, they are stars as they affected the painter. This are not mere twinkles of light, these are luminaries with fierce and beautiful power.

All Landscaped with Righteousness

All Landscaped with Righteousness

(“We’ll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness.” 2 Peter 3:13 [The Message])

I never knew all their names, the roses in my North Dakota
garden bed. Five bushes lined the driveway, from the velvet caret
to summer-noon yellow. Each winter I covered their delicate roots and
with three or four making it through the winter, I thought myself blessed to
replace the rest when spring lately warmed their cradle.

I’m no gardener, make no mistake; someone else had planted them there,
left for my adoption. Fed, watered, pruned and gifted; front yard
July mornings urged the new canes to catch up with the few.

The best blooms never saw more sun than a day or two, given away
to my wife, my daughter, and sometimes to an accidental hello;

Plus my kindergarten friend across the street.

Sad, a few weeks later,
that the rose I fetched her had “died”, I’d pluck another,
sweet pink laced with white as milk. I think she gave it to her mother,
(roses are never meant to be hoarded or collected like coins or stamps,
but displayed in ways that say the person who receives even one
floral masterpiece is more beautiful than the gifted blossom.)

Just before winter crumbled the remaining hips on their canes,
sad eyes stared me down one morning again about the previous rose’s demise.

I could not help it, but told her, no lie, I would bring her a rose,
next summer,
that would never die.

As soon as the frost departed and left its home vacant for warm loam
crawling with life and enrichment, I rushed downtown to where
the local vendor displayed spring’s best wares underneath a warming tent,
and searched for the best, never-die rose, for a 5-year-old who would
know the difference,

And, paying with my mud-knuckled fingers, hurried to her house,
dug half a hole and knocked on the door. She giggled, her mom smiled,
and my little friend and I planted the best place for a rose to be:

Right out front, for all her neighbors to see.

Rule Over Me

Rule Over Me

(“Someday I will appoint an honest king from the family of David, a king who will be wise and rule with justice.” Jeremiah 23:5)

Rule over me in Righteousness,
Reign over all my merciless,
Sing into me Your Lovingness,
Wash away all my passionless.

Declare Your Name, Decree my shame
has been swept final away, and the fury of my
misspent gain is bankrupt fully subtracted.

Linger over me in green-hill joy,
Loom far above my gray-back alley,
Command perfection, ban my collections
of gods who whipped me into shapeless and
goddesses who laughed my ghost.

Subject, silent, awake and aware,
I am all unclothed, unstable, unable
to bear the touch the broken wool against my skin
one day longer without Your dominion
within.

Laugh at my handy attempts, my exempt petitions
that beg Your permission for one more misstep, one more
toe across the line. We were doing fine until
I kinged me acute one sunny day.

Humbling upon the harsh reality,
mocking my own rewritten legality,
I kneel this time face-first in my sorrow and joy,
Righteous King, Rule over me; all Your Lovingness Sing.
