Never Sleeps

While a pastor on the Fort Berthold Reservation I was honored with the Indian name, "NeverSleeps". It was primarily because I was often responding to particular needs in the middle of the night.

Even more relevant, the Lord Himself, Maker of all, "Never Sleeps".

Surely you know.
Surely you have heard.
The Lord is the God who lives forever,
who created all the world.
He does not become tired or need to rest.
No one can understand how great his wisdom is.

Isaiah 40:28

Welcome to every reader. I am a simple follower of Jesus. He is perfect, I often fall short.

What All the Writing Was For

What All the Writing Was For

(“Stand up! Shine brightly! Now your light has come! The Lord's glory has risen to shine on you.” Isaiah 60:1)

It wasn’t the suffocating clouds that stopped him from breathing,
nor the ice wind that circled his feet.
He could not quite place it, perhaps the solitude had become
his undoing. Perhaps it was not the retreat he needed.
He saw as many stars as
the men in the next valley.
Though hidden, the same sun would crack the sky
occasionally,
a hint that things moved the same
direction as they had from the beginning.
But the winter captured every hope and,
reversing course,
froze his loneliness in place.

He loved to see the eagles atop the douglas firs,
the cows and calves nuzzling in the fields. But
the threads
that ran from friend to friend were
too fragile to bind much together these days.
He feared they had broken, and loosened,
had floated with the northern breeze. He
feared they had been dropped into the river.
And he was too weary to weave new tapestries,
too late, too far, too distant, too afraid
to see them unravel again.

So he wrote. He would send it to every pair of eyes
that had ever seen him truly. But they would think him
far more needy
than the man they knew before.
So he wrote. And sent it like paper boats on
the river to
the ocean to
the continent next door.

And he would not be disappointed that
no one answered. How could they know what
all the writing was for?

You Deserve More

You Deserve More

(“Make Your face to shine on Your servant; save me by Your lovingkindness.” Psalm 31:16)

Have you always thought you deserve more than
blizzard skies and hardpan scraps? Have you wondered
why
the earth wraps you from
outside, from farm to town?
Have you looked for smiles on a day
that crashes like thunder?
Have you dashed around the corner and
startled a toddler holding his mother’s
hand?

Have you had your words
dissected from your mouth;
have the tunes you knew from
tooth to grin
made you wish for long summers of
touch football again?
Have you shared a beer with
a widow and watched the tears begin?
Have you paid for another friend’s lunch
while he wasn’t looking? Have you
talked too much because you rarely talk
at all?

Wave, even if no one is watching. The air that
is stirred by the hummingbirds’ wings
brings the morning songs out to play. The
couple remodeling their house saw you
walk by, and giggled.

Each day is camouflage, each night is subversive,
each moon is a grin, each star a wink,
each breath a ripple that
revolves around thoughts uncontrolled.

Have you understood that tears still fall when
there is no one to see them?

We Will Rise Up

We Will Rise Up

(“But when Jesus heard this, he said, ‘Now don’t be afraid, just go on believing!’” Mark 5:36)

Arise, shine;
We will rise up.
Arise, shine;
We will meet the day.
Arise, shine;
We will rise up.
Arise shine;
Hear the people say.

She is not dead, but living,
she has not stopped her breathing,
do not fear, but be believing,
the dead are only sleeping.

Life arise;
We will greet you.
Life arise,
We will welcome joy.
Life arise,
We will greet you.
Life arise,
Make a joyful noise.

Christ is here now, he is seeking,
for those who felt the sun setting.
Do not fear, the sun is rising,
the day is only beginning.

Arise, shine;
We will follow.
Arise, shine;
We will mount with wings.
Arise, shine;
We will follow.
Arise, shine;
Hear the people sing.

We are not dead, but living,
we have finished our grieving.
Not afraid, we are believing,
the day will soon be dawning.

Arise, arise, arise.
We will arise.

The Tightness of Things

The Tightness of Things

(“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness on the horizon. Those who lead many people to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.” Daniel 12:3)

There is a light that penetrates the tightness of things,
a love that inhabits the elements and atoms of things.
Most live like lantern fish, mine workers with temporary
lamps on their heads. With factory-direct flashlights
they hope to illuminate the world.

There is a sun that irradiates the life-ness of things,
a grace that infuses the core and the splinters of things.
Most live like tiny kings, squires collecting rent from
lean-tos and taking tea in their receiving rooms. Underneath
the stars and moons they reduce it all to capital gains.

There is a flutter of wings that directs the spirit of things,
a peace that whispers behind every leaf and fingerprint of things.
Most live like boiling water, vapor blasting its way to the
top and casting each thought in scorched confusion. Above
the timers and schedules the blossoms have not moved

An inch since this morning.

Shine on Us!

"Shine on Us!"

“He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us and to shine from heaven on all those who live in the dark shadow of death, to guide our steps into the path of peace.” Luke 1:78b-79

I am sure many of us have had the same disconcerting moment. Something wakes us out of a deep sleep in the middle of the night. We may have been in the midst of a vivid dream full of images and people that seemed as real as the waking world. Those few moments between reverie and reality can be extremely disorienting. Perhaps it was bright daylight in your dream and you cannot figure out why it is now so dark. Or you were halfway through a conversation with an old friend, awaking to wonder how the conversation ended.

Though the Days

Though the Days

(“Arise! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.” Isaiah 60:1)

Though the days may appear as night,
feeling as numb,
though no man’s voice rings true or
offers a haven in the storm; there
is still more illumination than will ever
be extinguished by foggy pronouncements of
concrete minds that have figured out, before its time,
The theory of Everything.

The sprout between the sidewalk cracks;
the rains upon the deserted land,
the eastern alarm, is it preset or hand wound?
The wildflowers on the hill that was brown and
broken days before the rain, are not inhibited
in their splendid apparel, matching color revealed
by midmorning rays. The outline of sun-shadow,
petals and soil are never seen by

The peddlers of darkness who stay inside simply
to cook up another scheme.

Face Shine

Face Shine

(“Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.” Psalm 31:16)

The last thing I expected was such a brain-line
detonation, a shot to the head unfortunately.
Well-read and slightly turbulent, I was less excitable
and more resolute.

I loved my daughter’s flute, my son’s trumpet and the
travels of my middle one and would play all day in easy
harmony, or fly all night to be a part of the foothills
in Guatemala.

I hiked the shore of the Columbia, played tennis and replaced
my shoes every month. Let’s ride and travel,
lets scour the scenes at the beachside al fresco,

Although these days what seems like a blow to my head
leaves me reclining with, cat upon my chest,
longing for sun and water gun wars
outside our cabin in middle Minnesota.

Or on the Pacific
if the sand is warm, let us stay all day;
if the wind is up, let us buy a cup of coffee and watch
the waves play unemployed from dune to frothy evidence
of a higher tide before the sunrise.

And, if I stay inside all day,
let the rays of light fascinate my mind,
Your grace wind around each thought and memory.
Let the tremolo of a ballad’s sustained notes swirl within
and swell with the refrain of chesed,
and repeat the chorus of agape,
so I hear every motion of light bent as
the weight of glory defies all of our specified
particles and theory of waves.
