Never Sleeps

While a pastor on the Fort Berthold Reservation I was honored with the Indian name, "NeverSleeps". It was primarily because I was often responding to particular needs in the middle of the night.

Even more relevant, the Lord Himself, Maker of all, "Never Sleeps".

Surely you know.
Surely you have heard.
The Lord is the God who lives forever,
who created all the world.
He does not become tired or need to rest.
No one can understand how great his wisdom is.

Isaiah 40:28

Welcome to every reader. I am a simple follower of Jesus. He is perfect, I often fall short.

The Suggestion

The Suggestion

(“The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I say that what everyone does is evil.” John 7:7)

We are a soup, stew at best, full of spice and
onion,
knifed flesh and potato. On the chilly days
of rain, the darkening moments when pain pulls
the feet from one graveled step to the next, our
aroma fills the senses and covers senseless stains
left on towels and carpet.

If death is in the pot we do not know by the tasting.
No one complains, the stew is plainly satisfying, though
no one noticed the green peels of potatoes left
on the kitchen floor.

Why dampen the home and comfort,
we are full of good eating, and famine is older
than the recipe we have used from grandmother’s
mother and twice over again.

We are stew barely potable; pottage with rich aroma.
We are the best thing on a rainy day, warming toes and bones
and heart and face. But the trace that swirls round
the stewed liquid runs through all our methods of
preparation. We know it so well that we know nothing
else at all.

Until we taste the bouillabaisse prepared, not by a chef,
but by fishermen at the end of a long day of cold air
and freezing hands. Manna, bread of heaven, you
must
understand.

We do not hate you, we barely know you. We
hate the suggestion we have not perfected
our recipes
by now. We compete with contaminated hands,
while you stand by and watch,
but,
just before we would poison it all you salt the stew
with Your own death; tasting it once for everyone.
We barely know you. But there is now life in the stew
where you drank our diseased preparation.

Excuse me, someone is at the door, and, if I am right,
it is the knocking of One who, upon my hearing,
will take the time to sup with us tonight.

Banquets to Come

Banquets to Come
(“But the bread that comes down from heaven is such that a person may eat it and not die.” John 6:50)

Do not feed me diamonds, I will not eat them,
Do not serve me golden, I cannot taste it.
They have no fragrance, no foretaste of banquets to come.

I will dine on sunrise and drink its reflection from
the silent river still as autumn. I will drink the conversations
poured from yesterday’s thermos, the chill pinching my cheeks
with the hope of no more goodbyes.

I am a starving wanderer with an appetite wider than
the prisms refract. I hunger, on lazy mornings like these,
for the kitchen where momma baked

The French rolls from a secret recipe; butter, cinnamon,
sugar and cream, cornbread gold and
topped with molasses’ coffee crunch.. The damp air
from the crack in my bedroom window
met up with the aroma from the Jenn-air oven. Dad was there first

and never a single one leftover if anyone
slept in.

God's Food?

“Make sure to offer to me my offering, my food, my food gift as a soothing smell to me at its appointed time.” Numbers 28:2

God speaks as if the offerings we give Him are His “food”. The people were commanded to bring animal offerings which were burned on the altar at designated times. Every day of the year two male lambs were brought, and on every Sabbath two additional lambs. An offering consisting of two bulls, one ram, seven male lambs, and one male goat was brought the first day of the month. Passover and additional feasts had their own sacrifices.

Picnics Remade

Picnics Remade
(” The voice came a second time: If God says it’s ok, it’s okay.’” Acts 10:15 [The Message])
Lowered lovesick on the roof of a patron’s lodging,
fullpress prayer was all that was left of the noon devotion;
the only motion, rocking on the knees nearly calloused from
kneeling longterm, late term, before the object of love.
The skies are not enough to contain the passion flowing
from this tiny heart beating fresh, creating new love with
each pulse. The rooftop is not strong enough to
hold the weight of atomic moments where mass is greater
than the volume of words that poetry forms and
soily love envisions far beyond fascination to
strict affection. The code is obeyed for the
CodeWriter’s sake.
Fasting; for love nourishes the empty,
praying; for Divine enables the question,
seeking; for today replays the answer,
hearing; for spoken rehearses the remedy.
And seeing the answer, hearing the banquet
that lets us walk on the grass again, pet the animals in
the zoo,
cross the borders to love our enemies,
rsvp to recipes we had shunned so strictly,
Loving now cheery, the meals we take
are feasts remade into picnics for
cast-offs and relics, non-sequesters
and investors who are allowed now to
bet it all on walks where we once had
to wash our feet days before we began.
