Never Sleeps

While a pastor on the Fort Berthold Reservation I was honored with the Indian name, "NeverSleeps". It was primarily because I was often responding to particular needs in the middle of the night.

Even more relevant, the Lord Himself, Maker of all, "Never Sleeps".

Surely you know.
Surely you have heard.
The Lord is the God who lives forever,
who created all the world.
He does not become tired or need to rest.
No one can understand how great his wisdom is.

Isaiah 40:28

Welcome to every reader. I am a simple follower of Jesus. He is perfect, I often fall short.

Like Falling Asleep

Like Falling Asleep

(“The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.” Isaiah 32:17)

I heard someone say she fell in love with him like falling asleep:
slowly at first and then all of a sudden. This sleep has been my
waking,
and the silence of my dreams the making
of grains of sand tracked into the bed
by the dogs after their romp at the beach.

Yet the more I sleep the more dreary I become,
repeating weary mistakes I made before the face of one
who picked out each misdeed like cat hair on the carpet.

There was never peace as long as dander remained
on the surface or on the air. There never was quiet
as long as one word, deemed out of place, remained
in the apprentice’s vocabulary.

A rest remains. An assignment blinks--low focus,
high fidelity—upon the fog which remains on the
bogs of faint light’s later life.

A rest remains. Destiny framed by a loving call,
(not strict equipment code after all). Though first and much,
or last and minute, much waits the dreams of those who,
sleeping unoccupied by regret’s dark ride,
awake to begin,

Again.

Twisted

Twisted

(“Whoever wants to become great among you must serve the rest of you like a servant. Whoever wants to become the first among you must serve all of you like a slave.” Mark 10:43b-44)

It is easy to walk backwards with the wind,
even with no explanation offered, even while laughter’s daughter
points out or weaving path; it is easy to walk backwards, even
against the wind. We do not miss where we’ve been, and will
quickly see
where we are going.

It is twisted to want the basement apartment,
or to have erase our listing from Who’s Who and our
Human of the Year award.
It is bent, born with alien genetics to dream a destiny
with mainly both hands and all our fingers submerged
below greasy suds of a sub-par kitchen.
It is perverted to climb under forgotten bridges to
network with nameless faces; it is shameless to befriend
the unbankable, amend the unthankable, spend the unspendable
on every anonymous concert whispered to private orphans and
silent widows.

It is easy to talk sideways inches from the script and
days away from the grand production. Hear my elocution,
my precise enunciation, as I quote every solution for
drugs and poverty and pollution from my
raised dais (crane your necks please), and standing on my head;

You can pay twice the price if you attend again tonight.

How Long Will You Wait?

“So Joshua said to the people of Israel, ‘How long are you going to wait before you go in and take the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you?’” Joshua 18:3

The timing was no right for Israel to move in and take the land God had promised them. The time of waiting was over. God’s will and His guidance were clear. It was time to act. If they were to obtain what God had promised it was now time to move in, full force.
